I would be honored to accompany you on your journey. I have a passion for spiritually based psychotherapy that helps my clients realize who they truly are, to pursue their desire for meaningful work and to have good relationships with themselves and others in their lives.
Areas of Practice
The best therapy addresses the whole person: body, mind and spirit. We are part of something larger than ourselves and this is what ultimately heals us as we let go of our defenses and judgments and trust in a power greater than ourselves to lead us forward in our lives. When we do this, our sense of ourselves expands and we move past old limitations on who we thought we were. We develop better attitudes towards ourselves and healthier relationships with others. We find more meaningful work that is aligned with our values, and we become empowered to be creative and of service to others and our planet.
Spiritual Psychology takes our spiritual nature as a given in the work of psychotherapy. This means that I am just as interested in your relationship to God or your Higher Power or True Self as the more traditional focus of psychotherapy on the healing of one’s psychological issues. Spiritual practices such as meditation, prayer, involvement in a spiritual community and being of service to others are an integral part of our journey of healing and growth.
Our relationship to our culture and examining its strengths and weaknesses may be overlooked in traditional therapy. It is useful to explore how the overemphasis of our culture on materialism, hyper individualism, secularism and the frenzy of social media can distort and even undermine our personal values and life focus.
It also can be important to address how social issues such as racial, gender and economic discrimination have affected our sense of self while keeping this in the context of ourselves as “spiritual beings having a human experience”. This means holding in balance our universal spiritual nature with the rich and sometimes challenging particulars of our own personal experiences of racism, bigotry, misogyny and social injustice.
SMALL GROUP THERAPY
Group therapy compliments individual therapy; a small group can become for you a community of fellow travelers on the path of psychological healing and spiritual growth. In a safe loving small group setting, you get to experience being seen, accepted, loved and supported in ways that you probably never have before. You get to travel on a journey with like minded souls that are finding new ways to heal and grow beyond old wounds and old defenses.
In the small group, SOUL WORK, men healing from difficult experiences in their lives come together and share their stories. They learn how to let themselves be loved and supported by other men. The miracle of this is both simple and profound. Simple from the standpoint that this is not a group where men have to be strong in the usual way that men have been told to “stand tall”, but rather accepted just as they are. Profound in the way that this unconditional love begins to penetrate deeply into the hurt vulnerable places inside a man that usually never see the light of day and consequently never get healed.
The women’s small group, SOUL REPAIR, becomes a sisterhood of healing for survivors of childhood trauma. This is a safe, loving place where women who have suffered abuse, neglect, abandonment and betrayal can have a place to speak their truths, explore their inner experience, find their inner and outer strengths and be accepted and cared for by other women on their own healing journeys. This is incredibly life affirming and growth enhancing to those who have previously felt marginalized and unseen.
Today we have many ways to help those who have suffered from trauma, either from recent events or from abuse, neglect and abandonment that happened in childhood. Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT or Tapping, which I have extensive training in, has been shown in clinical trials to be highly effective in healing traumatic memories. In addition, I do a lot of somatically focused process work with survivors to help them to befriend the emotional pain held in their bodies that has troubled them for so long. Connecting mindfully with compassion to this vulnerability is paradoxically the gateway to healing the emotions locked away in their bodies.
Adult survivors of childhood abuse and neglect typically are not good at taking care of themselves. Often they abuse and neglect themselves in ways similar to how they were raised by their parents / caretakers. Consequently, they need to learn how to care for and support themselves like a healthy mother or father would have. This is something we focus a lot on in our work together: how you are taking care of yourselves in terms of basic needs, healthy boundaries, healing addictive patterns and developing nurturing relationships with others.
What does psychologically informed spiritual mentoring look like?
In spiritual traditions of all kinds there are people experienced on the path that help support and guide others on their way to spiritual realization and maturation. What I offer is a combination of spiritual direction and psychological guidance that will facilitate realizing your connection with your Higher Power, God or True Self and ensuring that this becomes integrated with your life as a whole.
I work with students of many faith traditions (and no faith traditions) Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Self Realization Fellowship, Twelve Step, etc. What all these traditions have in common is an orientation towards something greater than our normal limited and conditioned everyday consciousness. I explore with clients what types of spiritual practices and psychological work they need in order to more fully realize the teachings and values of their own spiritual traditions.
What the spiritual path requires of us all no matter what faith tradition ( or no tradition ) we come from, is a commitment to spiritual practices, involvement with some kind of a faith or practice community, and doing shadow work that serves to uncover and heal the influences of our limiting beliefs about ourselves, others and the world around us. I believe that an integrated psycho-spritual approach is the most effective means of ensuring that we realize the Truth of who we are and that we manifest this realization in all of our life, not just in the overtly spiritual side of our life.
